I Can Do It on My Own. But Do I Have To?

Sometimes, we carry things with us that weigh us down for a long time.
We talk to our friends about them, share our thoughts, receive encouragement, understanding, and perhaps some well-meaning advice. And yet, at some point, we may feel like we’re just going around in circles.
That’s exactly how I felt recently.
I have wonderful people in my life whom I can talk to about all kinds of things. Each of my friends is someone I can turn to for a different part of my life, or at least that’s how it feels to me. And I’m incredibly grateful for that.
Even ChatGPT has become something like a personal assistant to me, helping me organize myself and my thoughts. I can get things off my chest, feel understood, and talk things through, discuss situations, or even have a good rant with both my friends and my AI assistant.
But eventually, I reached a point where I felt that this was no longer enough. I had talked about the same problems so many times that I could hardly imagine another conversation making any difference.
And then I had a conversation with someone outside my usual circle of friends and acquaintances.
At first, I was skeptical.
Not because I didn’t trust the person I was talking to, but because I thought:
What good is another conversation going to do? I’ve already talked about this so many times.
But I was proven wrong.
What started as a conversation I barely expected anything from turned into one of the most valuable conversations I’ve had in a long time.
Not because all my problems suddenly disappeared. They certainly didn’t. But I was shown different possibilities and perspectives. It felt like looking out of a window and suddenly seeing the world through different eyes, beyond the familiar view I had grown so used to.
And that felt incredibly good.
Suddenly, I realized: There are so many other paths out there that I might not have noticed before.
Sometimes, we don’t even need a ready-made solution. Sometimes, all it takes is a different perspective, a new question, or an idea we might never have come up with ourselves.
I walked away from that conversation not only with new ideas, but also with an incredible amount of renewed energy, hope, and curiosity about what the future might bring and how I can shape it myself.

And that got me thinking.
Why is it sometimes so difficult for us to accept support?
Maybe because we’re used to solving our problems on our own. Because we don’t want to be a burden to anyone, or because we believe we have to be strong enough to handle everything ourselves. Perhaps we’re also afraid of bringing up the same problems over and over again without anything ever changing.
And that’s exactly the point.

Of course, there are many things we can handle on our own.
After all, real change begins within ourselves.
But sometimes, it helps to step outside our own bubble, beyond our familiar surroundings, and gain new perspectives through a conversation with someone outside that trusted circle.
That can open up entirely new possibilities.
This doesn’t mean that our friendships are any less valuable, or that we should stop turning to the people who are close to us. And it certainly doesn’t mean that we’re helpless without support.
It simply means that sometimes, broadening our horizons can make a real difference.
And that’s exactly why I’m so grateful that, through my psychological counseling, I can offer other people that kind of space.
A space where you can speak openly, sort through your thoughts, question perspectives that may have become stuck, and explore new possibilities together. Without feeling like you’re a burden to someone or that asking for support is a sign of weakness.
Through my own experience providing counseling, I know how much conversations like these can achieve. And my recent personal experience has reminded me once again just how valuable this kind of support can be for me, too.
Sometimes, it simply feels incredibly good to have someone by your side who helps you bring a little light back into the darkness.
And sometimes, a single conversation can make a much bigger difference than you ever thought possible.
